Wedding portraits

The Artful Portrait:

Finding the right location for beautiful portraits and spending the time to capture those special moments are key. I recommend taking advantage of the moments after the formal pictures with the family and wedding party, to take in the day and get some great pictures of just the two of you. I look for a setting that will enhance the image and showcase the time and season of the event.

As always my Signature package is available which includes unlimited time, leather proof album and image originals. To this one can add traditional and modern coffee table albums, and more. Currently booking for the 2008 season.

Weddings in black and white

The Black and White:

Black and white photography is that special tradition that never goes out of vogue. Looking at pictures in black and white allows one to take in the shadows, highlights and forms while providing a look and feel that moves the image into the realm of art and nostalgia.
An option that I am now providing is black and white film photography. In addition to the usual photographs taken in the latest state of the art digital mode, this black and white film approach is added to capture imagery with the natural grain and quality of the old fashioned negative. One may also have modern digital imagery created into black and white for framed pictures or custom albums.

June Wedding

Thank you so much for the beautiful photographs of our June wedding. I am just now starting to settle back into "normal" life and wanted you both to know that we enjoyed looking through the many amazing photographs and are struggling to choose the ones we want to frame. You were both a joy to work with and our guests went out of their way to comment on how you blended in with the crowd. A very belated but sincere thank you for your time, energy and artistic vision. You captured our memories for us on the most important day of our lives together. Jana and Peter Matra

a balanced eye

A BALANCED EYE: artful portraits, candids full of emotion.

As an event and wedding photographer one must be alert and in the moment. Anticipation of the candid moment is key. However one must also be alert to good locations and imagery that create artful portraits as well. This combination of the candid and the artful portrait is what I call the "balanced eye".

Though candid memories are always the best as people are shown as they naturally are, it is also important to be able to recognize and direct action when it comes to good portraiture. I always work with the bride and groom to determine exactly what their needs are. Throughout the day one must be a good photojournalist and at other times a traditionalist; and the photographer must be able to balance his style to the exact desires of the client.

Whatever style one is operating in, the key is being in the moment.

The wedding survey

Below are some questions and ideas I like to share with the wedding couple.

What are the most important pictures for you on your wedding day?

What is your approach to your formal pictures? Some people want them done swiftly so as to return to the party and others wish to spend more time on them. How much direction do you wish me to provide?

What about my style of photography most attracts you? I like to take a lot of unposed and candid pictures throughout the day. What are your thoughts on the candid approach?

Looking back at your wedding day, what would like to see and remember?

Ideas and recommendations:
  • Spend time together after the ceremony and after the formal pictures to enjoy each other and take some artistic/candid portraits in picturesque areas.

  • Pace your processional with enough space and time to allow the photographer to capture the movement.

  • Turn to face each other or the crowd while at the altar to allow for people to see you and for the photographer to get pictures of you.

  • Find out beforehand if your officiant has any rules or restriction concerning the photographer. Some restrict flash or movement.

  • If you plan on taking formal pictures with your entire wedding party and family in the Boston Public Garden be sure to get a permit beforehand. This is required by the city.

  • Provide your photographer with a list of formal pictures to be taken so as not to miss anyone.

  • Provide your photographer with good directions to all locations.

  • Provide your photographer with a general overview of the planned day.

Boston Public Garden

For engagement pictures the Boston Public Garden makes a beautiful locale. I usually meet the couple near the equestrian statue of George Washington near the Arlington Street entrance. From there we take a leisurely stroll around the pond looking for spots along the way that make for picturesque portrait locations. At almost anytime of day locations can be found as there are ample amounts of trees and viewpoints to provide for shade, good lighting and a nice backdrop. In all seasons one can capture great pictures reflecting the spirit and fun of nature and Boston.
